As to the 9spd setup having less tolerance of a derailleur being out of tune you are now confusing yourself. The Ritchey system you are refering to uses an 8spd cassette. Ritchey changed the dish of the wheel and added a 9th cog. Therefore the Ritchey system has the same gear spacing as any 8spd cassette and uses an 8 spd chain therefore not a narrower chain that you feel tend to break. It is the Shimano system that narrows the spacing between gears to fit the 9 cogs in the same space previously alotted for the 8spd cassette. This system does use a narrower chain. As tuning the rear derailleur with the Shimano setup it is true that is does have finer tolerces but a good tuner and smooth running cables easily makes up for that. As to the Fixed gear single speed I have one that I built up a few years ago in my arsonal of bikes along with my custom Lemond carbon fiber Road bike, my custom TNT BMX and of course my baby, custom Ibis Alibi as well.
2x9 is not for everyone but for the avid cyclist it proves to be a great system.
